I'm in favor of bridging guys who you just aren't sure about -- I think it's an effective tool to limit team risk.
But when your own top-10 pick puts up back-to-back 60-point seasons coming off his ELC, come on, now. That's what you drafted the guy to do. He's doing it.
Pay the man his money on a long-term deal -- pay him more during the RFA years so you can mitigate the cap hit while buying out UFA years.
Dubas knows this. He'll get him signed to a deal that looks a bit like Gaudreau's, maybe slightly less |

He wants 7, Leafs should offer 5 and settle at 6.
The problem with the "bridge" deal, is that it brings him closer to free agency so because he's already played two full seasons (don't think his first 22 game season counts), if you give him a 5 year deal, he becomes a UFA at the end of it. Obviously, the Leafs will offer 4 years so he's still an RFA (which will cost more per year to get him to agree to) and he'll want 5 years to have the UFA option (which would cost you less but he could walk at the end of it).
Give him 13 million dollar signing bonus this year with a 4 year contract with AAV of 6.5 million a year. That'd be 26 million with half of it upfront. Could make him take the 4 year deal and still be an RFA when he's done that deal so he's still under team control. |

A little bit extra to get him to take the 4 year deal instead of wanting 5.
He can become a UFA at 25 or 7 years of service. Question is, how do they determine what a year of service means. If his 22 game season counts, then a bridge would have to be 3 years to keep him as an RFA by the end of it. |

A bridge deal will keep him motivated, something he did not seem to be in the playoffs. |

Or you get him to sign for 6.25 - 6.75 for 8 which is essentially what he is worth right now comparatives would be Ehlers contract from last year....

pastrnak got 6 years, ehlers got 7. I think 6.5 should buy you 7 years of nylander. |

What if he (his agent) thinks he'll be worth more than that in a couple years and doesn't want to get locked into an 8 year deal?
8 years at 6.5 AAV would be great for the Leafs but would it be great for him? Maybe at 8 years, he wants 7.5 AAV because they're buying some of his UFA years. |

No We want 26 point overpaid Seabrook until age 85, then we can ask the Hawks for advice on how he can develop incurable diaper rash for the last three years of his contract.
